His & Hers Cafe

His & Hers Cafe

Thanks to our member Deletia who submitted this photo to us, of a cafe in Rochester, NY. You can clearly see that the name of the business should appropriately be spelled, “His & Hers Cafe”.

Perhaps there’s a story behind this…..err…or not. Next time someone orders pancakes and waffles, maybe they can take the time to ask about this typo!

  1. Maybe the apostrophe is actually dripping paint from the brown trip above.

  2. trip should be trim :Þ

  3. Should it be “His & Hers Cafe” or “His & Her Cafe?”

  4. His & Her Cafe. The quick check is “His Cafe” “Her Cafe.” You wouldn’t say “Hers Cafe.”

  5. Looks like I could be wrong in my initial comments. Anyone else have thoughts? Can someone call this cafe? LOL….

  6. i agree with “his and hers cafe” since this denotes ownership or possession. you can only use “her” in the third person, direct object (pronoun as the receiver of the action), indirect object (“to whom” or “for whom” the action is done), and the object of preposition ( pronoun after a preposition).well, whatever !!!

  7. the apostrophe definitely doesn’t belong, and i’m pretty sure it should be “his and her cafe.” you would only need “hers” to replace a noun, and it’s fairly obvious that “cafe” is the object of possession. taking it a bit further, the current name of the cafe implies multiple unknown owners, so “their cafe” would be a better correction. at the same time, the allusion to an old-fashioned trend of using the phrase “his and her” would be lost.

the only other explanation i can think of is that the owners of the cafe have the surnames “His” and “Her.” the apostrophe would then be justified, but only because there’s no sentence context to suggest ambiguous possession.

i think that, more than anything, the owners are just guilty of poor design choices. the cafe name is not a sentence, but by putting “cafe” in the same font and color as “his and her,” we are misled to read it as such. putting “cafe” underneath “his and her” or using a different font would probably have allowed this cafe to go unnoticed.

  8. I think it can be “His and Hers Cafe” if the name doesn’t imply that the “Cafe” is theirs. For instance, “The Big and Tall Store” doesn’t necessarily mean the “Store” itself is big and tall.
